Every so often, we learn about another bill that a state could pass, making CPR mandatory for high school graduation. New York Assembly Bill A 5510 takes another spin on it, and would make CPR training mandatory for all teachers in the state of New York. This is a requirement that is already in place in other states, and could lead to more lives saved. We’ve been getting many calls about this, thanks to our free CPR training for high school students, and the answer is yes, we do offer professional level CPR certification that teachers can use.
The bill that they are trying to pass would make CPR a requirement for both new teachers to get their teaching certification, but also for all other teachers upon recertification.
Currently, CPR courses are required for coaches in New York state, but not for teachers, according to the New York State Education Department.
The bill was introduced by New York State Assemblyman Dennis Gabryszak. Schools must have AED equipment on site at each instructional school facility, as well, to ensure ready and appropriate access for use during emergencies.
